Angelo Quantez was not a brave man. When the police stopped him at the road block his heart stopped as well. He had been sure they would search his cab and find the plastic wallets the man in London had paid him so much to deliver. But they had only asked him questions, they had not searched his cab and he had been allowed to go. Now, as he drove away, the reaction set in. He felt an overwhelming desire to pass water. The road was deserted and he pulled his large container lorry to the side and stopped. It was not a good place to park, being one of the few stretches of two-way road on this route, but he couldn’t wait. He jumped down from the cab and hurried into the bushes.

As he did up his flies and lit a calming cigarette he heard the scream of approaching engines. He walked back towards his lorry and saw two sets of headlights approaching at high speed. Suddenly he realized that in his haste he had switched off the lights of his vehicle. It stood seventeen feet high, ten feet wide, completely blocking one side of the road and would be invisible to the oncoming cars. He started to run.

The leading car was only thirty yards from the parked lorry when its headlights picked up the huge wall that was the rear of the container lorry. It was too late. The driver spun the wheel desperately to the right and the car careered onwards at an angle for a second, then turned over just before it struck. It spun into the air and the driver was thrown out, his body cartwheeling in a loose flurry of arms and legs, finally coming to rest in the bushes beside the road. The car flew through the air, struck a telegraph pole five feet from the ground and burst into flames.

Angelo Quantez began to shiver uncontrollably. He was not a brave man.
